The workshop's guiding idea is to provide an interdisciplinary platform which leads to a more comprehensive understanding of turbulence and extreme nonlinear waves. The statistics of the latter is typically non-Gaussian; characteristic, heavy-tailed probability distributions have been observed both, in hydrodynamical and nonlinear optical systems. We therefore expect stimulating discussions about the commonalities and differences in the underlying dynamical models which will be promising for the future development of the field in both communities.
